The word compendium is mainly intended to be a tool to provide clear definitions to the Super-Shiritori bot. Although this is the Word compendium's main purpose, it also allows for the addition of unaddable terms in the miscellaneous area for the sake of convenience. With this in mind, there are a multitude of guidelines one must follow to ensure the format of the Word compendium entry is correctly made.
Page titles and linking to the Word compendium
Every page title should be formatted as Word_compendium/capitalfirstletter/capitalfirsttwoletters/word, with the word always being in entirely lowercase (for example, aardvark would be Word_compendium/A/AA/aardvark). Ensuring the word is spelled correctly in the title is of utmost importance, as if you capitalize it wrong you may be unable to correct it without the assistance of an administrator.
Because linking to the Word compendium can be an arduous task, a template has been created to make linking to the Word compendium easier. To use this template, simply add {{wc|word|display (optional)}}.
Defining the words
Now that you've correctly created the page, you need to make sure you define the word correctly while also adding any optional extra information. To do this, use the Definition template. There, you will find instructions on how to use the template for your own ease. However, you must make sure to always use proper punctuation when defining words. Additionally, if you are adding an acronym/abbreviation (or a word which has one), the unabbreviated form will be the page that has the real definition of the word. Any alternative forms will instead serve as soft redirects to the word (see ♩♪♫♪♬♬♮♬♬♭♪♪ for an example). If a word has an American and a British variation, use the American variation as the default. If the alternative form of a word meet none of the previously mentioned criteria (meaning, it is not an acronym/abbreviation, or an American or British difference in spelling) then try to use the most common form of the word as the default. If you're unsure, ask here.
Categories and alphabetical listings
Editors are expected to remember to add any valid categories to the words they add to the Word compendium. Category:Words, Part of speech categories (Category:Nouns, etc.), and word size categories (Category:3 letter words, etc.) are all done automatically without needing any extra work from the editor. Categories should be listed in order of most broad to least broad.
Miscellaneous area
The miscellaneous area is reserved for relevant words that start or end with a hyphen, or contain non-alphabetic, non-hyphen, non-apostrophe letters. This section is never to be used for any words that could theoretically be added to the game, nor to add gibberish or words unused in English.
Title complications
While the secondary goal of the word compendium is to have every correct form of a word for convenience, certain titles lead to complications due to being special characters in MediaWiki markup. Every situation described below will only occur if you're adding words to the miscellaneous area
Restricted with workarounds
Words containing these characters require some extra effort to ensure the title is properly understood by FANDOM. These characters include but are not limited to:
- _ is used both for words containing spaces or real underscores. If the word contains an underscore, you will need to utilize the
tparameter in {{Definition}} to correct the displayed title. - % cannot directly be entered into the title. To have a % properly show in the title, you must enter it as %25 in the URL.
Impossible words
Some words are simply impossible to add to the word compendium. These include but are not limited to:
- Anything that goes against FANDOM's terms of use.
- Anything over 255 characters long.
- Anything containing a # / < > [ ] { } | : (see this page for more info), or 3 or more continuous tildes.
