🔪 About Accent-Assassins
Accent-Assassins are clever or mischievous players who take advantage of visually deceptive letter variants from foreign scripts, accented alphabets, or phonetic systems to mislead opponents in games like Super Shiritori. The technique typically involves masking starting or ending letters using letters that look like standard English characters — but aren't.
This form of linguistic sleight-of-hand adds a subtle, often hilarious psychological layer to gameplay.
🧠 Goals of an Accent-Assassin
- Confuse the opponent into thinking a word ends in one letter when it actually doesn’t
- Bypass certain starting/ending restrictions in fast-paced games
- Showcase knowledge of linguistic symbols from dozens of languages
- Add flavor, style, and sometimes chaos to the game
✅ Effective Letter Variants (Visual Deception)
| Symbol | Mimics | Origin/Notes |
|---|---|---|
| ť | t | Slovak letter, looks like t' |
| ď | d | Slovak |
| ľ | l | Slovak |
| ß | ss | German Eszett |
| þ | th | Old English “thorn” |
| œ | oe | French/Latin |
| æ | ae | Old English/Norse |
| λ | l | Greek lambda |
| β | v | Greek beta |
| θ | th | Greek theta |
| ψ | ps | Greek psi |
| φ | f | Greek phi |
These symbols are favored by experienced tricksters for their balance of deception and aesthetic elegance.
❌ Less Effective Variants (Too Obvious)
- ş, ě, ã, č, ů, ĩ These add excessive squiggles or diacritics that break the illusion and are often immediately recognized as foreign.
🧿 Perfect-Mimics: Letters You Can’t See Coming
Some character variants are virtually indistinguishable from their standard Latin equivalents. These are the most dangerous and subtle tools in an Accent-Assassin’s toolkit.
| Symbol | Mimics | Origin | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Η | H | Greek Eta | Identical to uppercase Latin H |
| Α | A | Greek Alpha | Often indistinguishable in sans-serif fonts |
| С | C | Cyrillic | Used heavily in deception due to visual similarity |
| Ι | I | Greek Iota | Same as capital i |
| О | O | Cyrillic | Same as Latin capital O |
| З | 3 | Cyrillic | Looks like the number three |
🌍 Language Systems Used
Accent-Assassins draw from a wide range of scripts, phonetic sets, and even emoji-based typography to execute deceptive plays:
- Greek: η, θ, ψ, λ, β, φ, Η, Α, Ι, etc.
- Cyrillic: л (l), с (s), я (ya), З (3), etc.
- Slavic Latin: ť, ď, ľ (Slovak)
- Old English / Norse: þ (thorn), ð (eth), æ (ash), œ
- IPA (Phonetics): ʃ, ʒ, ŋ, ʈ, ʂ, ʝ, etc.
- Emoji & Symbols: 🎯, 💀, 🔥, ™, ®, © — often misinterpreted or stylized into words
🪧 Symbol Traps (Emoji & Trademark Bait)
Certain legal or emoji characters are visual traps: they look like one thing but normalize into something completely different. These are often used at the ends of words to disguise the true final letter — a potent Accent-Assassin move.
❗Examples:
| Visual Word | Actual Normalized Word | Ends In |
|---|---|---|
EPIPEN®
|
epipen-registered
|
d |
These transformations are invisible to the eye but critical for proper start/end detection during gameplay.
🧬 Built-In Counter: normalize_word() Function
The normalize_word() function used by the Super Shiritori bot contains over 150 rules that detect and convert:
- Greek, Cyrillic, Slavic, IPA, and phonetic letters
- Accented Latin characters and ligatures
- Currency and legal symbols
- Emojis that normalize to real nouns or endings
- Musical notation and obscure typographic signs
Why this matters:
Players may think a word ends in “®” (visually: r), but the bot knows it ends in registered → d, and will treat it as such.
This change makes the deception mechanics clearer and adds a powerful dimension to the Accent-Assassin strategy. Let me know if you want a reference table specifically for all emoji or typographic endings used in play (like 🎃 = pumpkin, 💀 = skull, etc.)!

🎭 Final Note
“A normal player ends their turn. An Accent-Assassin ends your sanity.”
