Manual-Tori
Manual-Tori is a community-run fallback version of Shiritori, played entirely by the players themselves with no bot involvement at all. It only sees regular use while Super-Shiritori is offline, and has its own dedicated channels set aside for it in the Discord server. Where multiplayer Shiritori and even Fool's Mode still have a bot enforcing (or deliberately mis-enforcing) some standard of validity, Manual-Tori has no authority at all: there is no moderator adjudicating words, no consensus process, and no fixed standard for what counts as valid — just whatever reaction a word happens to get from whoever happens to see it.
Getting Started
No command starts a Manual-Tori session — there is nothing to start, since no bot is involved. Players simply begin posting words in one of the designated channels the same way they would in a normal multiplayer game. There is no validation step of any kind beyond the reactions other players choose to leave.
Rules
Manual-Tori keeps only the loosest shell of Shiritori's structure, with no one actually enforcing any of it:
- A word is meant to begin with the final letter of the previous word, but nothing stops a player from posting literally anything.
- A word's fate is decided purely by reaction: a ✅ effectively marks it accepted, a ❌ marks it rejected, and a word that gets no reaction at all is simply left in limbo — nobody is obligated to resolve that ambiguity, and play often just continues past it regardless.
- A repeated word only "breaks the chain" if someone happens to notice and react to call it out; nothing catches it automatically.
- No player is supposed to take two turns in a row, but again, nothing actually enforces this beyond other players noticing and reacting.
Community Moderation
There is deliberately no moderation of word validity in Manual-Tori — no one steps in to settle a disputed word, break a tie, or rule on an edge case; whatever the reactions land on is simply what happened. The one and only exception is content moderation unrelated to word validity itself: genuinely inappropriate language (slurs and similar) is removed the same way it would be anywhere else in the server, on ordinary moderation grounds, not as a ruling on whether the "word" was valid Shiritori play.
Ending a Session
A Manual-Tori session ends when a repeated word is caught, when no one can think of a valid continuation, when the group simply decides to reset, or when the bot comes back online, at which point play reverts to normal multiplayer Shiritori. There is no automatic end-of-game summary; a session's history is only whatever the players themselves kept track of.
Notable Usage
Manual-Tori naturally sees the most sustained use during extended bot outages. The most significant recorded case is the roughly three-month period during which Super-Shiritori was entirely offline while its operator, Ghost, relocated from South Korea to Hawaii — Manual-Tori was the only way the game continued during that gap.
Etiquette
- Keep it casual — Manual-Tori exists so players can keep playing while the bot is unavailable, not to replace it.
- Expect chaos. With no one actually enforcing the rules, a session can and often does fill with words that would never pass in a real game; that's treated as the normal texture of the mode rather than something to be corrected.
