- A ransomware Trojan first observed in September 2013 that spread through malicious email attachments and via the GameOver Zeus botnet; once executed it encrypted victims’ files using public-key cryptography (with the private keys held by the attackers) and demanded payment (often in Bitcoin or prepaid vouchers) for decryption.
